The Serengeti migration is the largest and longest overland migration in the world, involving approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles. This natural phenomenon takes place every year in the Serengeti ecosystem, which spans across Tanzania and Kenya.

The migration is driven by the availability of fresh grazing land and water, following a predictable pattern:

  1. December-March: The migration begins in the southern plains of the Serengeti, where large amounts of rainfall create lush, green grasslands that attract herbivores seeking food. This period is also known as the calving season, as wildebeest give birth to their young.
  2. April-May: The herds start moving northwest as the rains subside in the southern plains. They follow the rains to the grasslands around Lake Victoria and the Grumeti River.
  3. June-July: The migration reaches the western Serengeti and enters the Grumeti Reserve, where they cross the Grumeti River. This river is home to large Nile crocodiles that pose a significant threat to the migrating animals.
  4. August-September: The herds continue their journey northward to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, crossing another major obstacle: the Mara River. This crossing is one of the most dangerous parts of the migration due to strong currents and crocodiles waiting in ambush.
  5. October-November: The herds return to the southern plains of the Serengeti as new rainfall arrives, starting the cycle again.

It also provides substantial economic benefits for both Tanzania and Kenya through tourism.

Climate change poses a potential threat to this natural wonder, as changes in rainfall patterns may disrupt the predictable cycle of resources that drive the migration. Conservation efforts are essential to protect this unique phenomenon and maintain its ecological balance for future generations to enjoy.
